Dear Mr Murphy

The Australian Government is developing and implementing a national Golden Gurus program which will begin on 1 January 2010. Golden Gurus is an initiative arising from the Australia 2020 Summit.

The Golden Gurus program will encourage and support skilled volunteering and small business mentoring opportunities for mature age people aged 50 years and over) who are retired, semi-retired, or no longer working full-time.

Golden Gurus will be delivered by a community of quality organisations across Australia.

Senator the Hon Ursula Stephens, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, has extended an invitation to a range of community and not-for-profit organisations to apply to deliver the program.

Great idea. Many early retirees find they have little to fill their time and would like to volunteer but don’t know where to start. There is so much knowledge and expertise just going to waste. Imaginine if just a fraction was harnessed!

Great idea. Incidentally if you are an “early retiree” looking for some worthwhile activity check out your local U3A group - they are always looking for volunteers and in particular volunteer tutors who can provide interesting presentations on a whole range of subjects - art, history, geography, travel, anthropology, science and the humanities- the list of needs for mentally challenging presentations is endless.
